Hello xxxxxx! I have been thinking about your question. I can report that I am very happy with my decision, and I feel it has been a good move. I haven't regretted it once, although I still look back to my time with fondness!

I have never been fitter for one. I go out mountain biking, running, kayaking or walking at least two or three times a week and always on the best weather days. Plus lugging backs of laundry up the stairs at the hostel and so on. :) Mountain biking is my new passion really. But just being up here where it is quiet and beautiful is an end in itself. I have had plenty of visits from friends from back home (but not too many visits!) which is lovely.

I think there were two types of reasons for my decision; reasons to leave the old job, and reason to do this particular new one. Reasons to leave were: starting to feel like i would become a lifer and potentially feeling trapped, long commute, didn't like northampton/MK that much, RSI symptoms getting worse, fed up of the office every day, sedentary lifestyle...
I suppose the career question is a big one; I like to think that I could still resume a career in engineering/software if I so wished. Also I'm still working on my OU maths degree which hopefully opens things up a bit. But also having had this breathing space and dropping off the treadmill, so to speak, has opened up opportunities (in my head at least) as I now feel that I'm coming at things from a bit more of a blank canvas of sorts.

I'm still figuring out where things will lead though. As steve jobs said in a speech; in whatever you do, you can only 'join the dots' looking backwards. Not everything can be planned to lead to a precise outcome; you can do seemingly random stuff which turns out later on to have been crucual to where you are now. But at the time you did it you could never have known.

But i'm not making any plans to change from YHA in the lakes just yet.

Hmm I have gone on a bit!

At the end of the day I what I have learned from this is that it has reinforced is my belief that a change every now and then is a good thing. Be it a change of department, a new job, or something more extreme like i did.

Also my decision was motivated in part by reading the book 'How To Be Idle' by Tom Hodgkinson. Make me think about what is important to me and what isn't etc.. gave me courage. It took about 2-3 years ruminating to actually decide to to this though! Making a decision to do something is often harder than actually doing it! But in the end I knew the time was right.

Also it's worth talking things with people, to see if your ideas stand up (and also make them more real, in a way), but not necessarily be too influenced with what they say or put off by negative responses. Especially parents, mine were not really very keen on my idea and tended to focus on the negatives, but now I think they are convinced.

As a wise friend (who'd had a happy an successful life) once said to me: when you have a hard decision to make then by definition there must be pros and cons to each outcome; so whatever you decide, it will turn out to be the right decision because you get positives either way (sort of a paradox but liberating:)!

So this afternoon I sat my M208 exam. Something that occured to me afterwards was how all sorts of images and memories had popped up to accompany the process of doing the paper, corresponding with where and when I studied that particular topic (in the garden, on the train, in a pub garden, in the car by a canal, in rich and lisa's kitchen). So overall like a little tour of the last 8 months compressed into 3 hours, with maths. It went pretty well, I think.

Then we went to a pub which sold strawberry beer but had sold out so we had strawberry juice instead.

Today I've become obsessed with the soundtrack to the utterly fantastic film Pirates of The Carribean: Dead Man's Chest (look not upon the celebrities, look not upon the hype, but upon.. it). The soundtrack is so full on (pow, zap, happy) and so wrong (pow, zap, happy), its just wonderful. In fact it may even be as good as the Back to the Future theme.

The score to POTC:DMC is by Hans Zimmer. I have a theory that all Hans Zimmer soundtracks are essentially the same. As an example, I have put together a brief audio montage of sections from Gladiator and Pirates 2. It goes Gladiator-Pirates-Gladiator-Pirates . (Or does it? Can you spot the join?...)

A waterloo station roof moment.

On an aeroplane, on the runway at Salzburg at night. Near the back in an aisle seat. Sitting with strangers, companions spread around the plane. Not much leg room, but cool, not stuffy. Following a busy, fun 2 days. Looking forward to getting home. Tired but awake. Listening to music: Ben Folds, Still Fighting It. Properly listening. In a little world. An announcement is made, then the main cabin lights go off and it is wonderfully dark.

All down the rows little arms with little hands on reach up to switch on their little personal beams of light overhead, to light up pages to read. Through something in that moment I felt a bond with all those people reaching for light, bare arms illuminated, half in shadow. We were the same.

I sat there freshly unburdened, and looked to my left at the window. Coloured lights appeared, slid past, getting faster, and then as the full accelleration of the plane kicked in the music in my ears entered a slow building crescendo. Just as the nose of the plane lifts up and the runway falls away, the big drum break hits and I smile at the cheesily perfect movie soundrack synchronicity, and the feeling that plane seems to be floating up on the music, and anything seems possible.

Yesterday evening there was some excitement. All the lights and televisions and computers went off, and all the local burglar alarms went on. For there had been a power-cut.

It was a strange moment. People came to their front doors; the evening was gloomy but not dark. Because I'm odd, I placed my minidisc recorder outside and got the sound of the alarms dying as their batteries expire (as cars pass by, as the wind blows, as a dog barks, as someone starts playing a piano...)

The book is called Eveything and More: A Compact History of ∞ and it's by David Foster Wallace. I'm really enthused about it at the moment, it's philosophy/maths and beautifully written with a refresingly direct but also esoteric style that I really dig. It's about historical struggles with the concept of infinity, with particular reference to Georg Cantor.

First notable extract (p3, footnote):

In modern medical terms, it's fairly clear that G.P.L.F. Cantor suffered from manic-depressive illness at a time [1800s] when nobody knew what this was, and that his polar cycles were aggravated by professional stresses and disappointments, of which Cantor had more than his share. Of course, this makes for less interesting flap copy than Genius Driven Mad By Attempts To Grapple With ∞. The truth, though, is that Cantor's work and it's context are so totally interesting and beautiful that there's no need for breathless Promethiusizing of the poor guy's life. The real irony is that the view of ∞ as some forbidden zone or road to insanity—which view was very old and powerful and haunted math for 2000+ years—is precisely what Cantor's work overturned. Saying that ∞ drove Cantor mad is like mourning St. George's loss to the dragon; it's not only wrong but insulting.

Observations of the heavenly bodies provide no basis for choosing. One may, however, still ask which hypothesis is physically true. Although the opinion in antiquity was overwhelmingly in favour of a stationary Earth, there were thinkers who subscribed to the opposite view.

I like how it's written so as to embrace the unknown and the means of discovery, rather than oh well of course we now this, but back then, they were all wrong, how silly of them!

I drew a plot of the closing times by month, taken from the sign. Here it is:

It's quite satisfying to think that someone worked this out, and then made that wonderful sign. And not just any old sign, they cast it in steel.

I can't remember what park it is, but the sign is near a statue of Oscar Wilde on a rock.

Yesterday I saw one of the most beautiful sights I can remember, driving through the big cutting in the hill as you go up the M40, rounding the corner so the view out to the west is revealed on the left. About 8pm towards the end of what had been a fiery sunset; now a red glow. The sky purple and grey, down to a thin intense red line on the horizon. Below it a wide expanse of fields stretching in from the horizon; dark grey, almost blue in the far distance, graduating to a deep, dark green. And the motorway streaming white with car headlamps curving away northwards.

All accompanied by Dave Pierce's Dance Anthems on radio 1 :)

Festival Hall, RPO+Leonard Slatkin with Vaughan Williams London Symphony (No. 2). Really good, I thought. D.B. described it as "like Mahler, a bit baggy jumper. Essentially a collection of nice chords".

An old lady two rows back had a bit of a tickle in her throat. She began by coughing quietly but as the first movt. grew her cough volume grew with it, culminating in a marvellouly well timed musical/coughing crescendo.
